As a unique feature, Martin will pre-make one-of-a-kind fusions designed especially for your design. There is an additional fee for your fused pieces.   Upon registration participants will be asked to submit a picture of the animal, bird, reptile or other creature and identify where you would like to use your fused glass pieces, cost depending on the size you design (cost provided when you order).  You can visit Martin’s website to get ideas but please do not copy his or anyone else’s.  This will be your own unique design.

Martin will create the fused glass piece(s) a few weeks in advance.  Martin can you’re your fusions of fish fins, butterfly wings, eyes, flower petals, etc. Additional ones will be brought for sale.  If you need help with your design Martin is happy to help you.

TEACHING METHOD:
The first day begins with a 45 minute PowerPoint show illustrating how smalti, millefiori and glass fusions are made. Using examples of his own work, martin will demonstrate how these materials can be incorporated into mosaics for great effect.  Participants will then begin planning and working on their mosaics. Martin will give individual assistance to each participant as needed and Michele will assist.

STUDENT PREPARATION FOR COURSE
Please choose a subject or submit your own, by February 24th.  If you want to design your own subject please submit 2 versions for approval by the 24th.  Try to make your ideas different from each other, so that we will be able to discuss the various mosaic possibilities, which your designs will suggest to me. Your designs should be between a square 10 x 10 inches or rectangular 8 x 11 inches if you want to finish your mosaic during the course.

Keep your designs simple and bold. A look at Martin’s website www.martincheek.co.uk or  his books will show you examples.  If you are not good at making your own he will bring some for you to choose from.
Your own design can be inspired by anything from a photo of your own pet to a greeting card that you like or even a piece of wrapping paper or packaging that may have caught your eye. If you can decide and resolve your design beforehand, this will save you valuable time on the first day. Martin will be happy for you to email your design to him in advance, in order to discuss this with you.
