Smalti mosaics have been around for centuries and classes in Classical methods are taught worldwide. Fifty years ago Italian glassmakers teamed up with Mexican artisans and the Perdomo Family to create smalti in Cuernavaca, Mexico. These artists adopted a looser style of Andamento and made varigated colors creating mosaics in a more painterly fashion. Having trained in both Italy and Mexico I try to bring the best of both worlds to my workshops.
I employ both traditional and non-traditional methods and materials. The focus in my class is on Color and Tonal Values while emphasizing the importance of Andamento in both Traditional Styles and Modern Styles. In every class I also teach the 'Modern' methods of using smalti in textural ways; standing on end, in shards, mixing wth other types of glass, etc. although using these techniques are optional in each workshop.
After several years of teaching smalti classes I found that it was the first 3 days that were the most essential and that, if the project was smaller, a three day class was more than enough to learn how to create a wonderful mosaic in smalti, even for beginners! This shorter schedule saves you time and is more affordable, however, four and five day workshops are available upon request and do provide additional practical experience.
I have had wonderful results with first time mosaic students as well as those with experience.
